Children will participate in classroom discussions and book chats, share their feelings in written form, and participate in fun, engaging activities that build emotional awareness and social skills.

Each book companion includes a detailed lesson plan, guided questions, anchor chart, concept posters, writing responses, and follow-up activities (printable and digital included). Great for distance learning or in-class teaching of social-emotional skills!

1. My Magic Breath by Nick Ortner

This book companion focusing on our breathing. Children will learn and practice breathing strategies that can help a person manage different feelings and find ways to calm themselves.

2. Listening to My Body by Gabi Garcia

The lesson is about how sensations and feelings go together. Children will be encouraged to listen to their bodies and develop an awareness of what it is telling them. They will learn and use calming strategies.

3. The Rabbit Listened by Cori Doerrfeld

This lesson is about how their needs change and understanding our emotions. Children will recognize that our needs change depending on what happens to us. They will understand the importance of listening and showing empathy.

4. I Am Yoga by Susan Verde

This lesson teaches us about yoga. Children will recognize that they have the power to strengthen their body and calm their mind through yoga. They will practice yoga poses while breathing.

5. Charlotte and the Quiet Place by Deborah Sosin

The lesson is about finding "quiet" in order to focus and do the things they want to do. Children will recognize a quiet place that they can go to or imagine to help them find calm and peace. They will practice sitting still in quiet.

There is a detailed lesson plan for each book with “Book Chat” cards and questions to guide your discussion before, during, and after reading. An interactive anchor chart and writing activity are included that focus on the social-emotional skill presented in the book and encourage children to express their thinking. This is an excellent way to incorporate social-emotional learning into your ELA block each week!

  • There are 4 activities for each children’s book. Some include digital options.
  • I suggest reading 1 book per week and doing the lesson. Use the extra activities to reinforce the topic covered in the story throughout the week.
  • Differentiated templates included. Please choose what fits best with your students’ abilities and needs.
